Description :

The 1960s were the heyday of the Volkswagen. Volkswagens were the vehicle of choice for the emerging eco-conscious crowd, young hipsters, and folks who just wanted to be a little different. The most popular model was the Bug, but there were also vans, campers, and even trucks, which is how this camper started out its life. The owner of the pictured vehicle wanted a camper, so after consulting with Perris Valley Campers of Perris Valley, California, he did the necessary prep work on the 1966 VW truck, which included removing the tailgate and luggage doors and cutting out a section of the bed. The stripped-down VW truck was left at Perris Valley and the work was done (appropriately) by a guy named Mac. Perris Valley Campers went out of business in 1989. The camper eventually made it to Michigan where it was purchased by its current owner, Michael Jernigan. Photographed on the grounds of the Sloane Museum, Flint, Michigan.
